On Thursday evening the UC Journalism Department presents Pulitzer
nominee Glenn Gamboa, chief music critic at Newsday. Gamboa will
discuss the work he did on the interactive series chronicling the 25th
anniversary of hip-hop. His presentation is sure to be exciting for
students interested in journalism as well as hip-hop. The presentation
will be in 500 Swift Hall and begins at 7 p.m. FREE SNACKS AVAILABLE!

   Also be sure to join us Saturday for our Reporting on Arts and
Culture seminar. Journalists from across the country will come
together to discuss effective coverage of the arts in print media as
well as on the Internet. Panel discussions begin at 9:30 a.m. in room
400 of TUC, and will run all afternoon. Again, SNACKS WILL BE
PROVIDED!

   And, be sure to stick around for Your Negro Tour Guide: Truths in
Black and White, a one-woman play dealing with race, gender and living
in Cincinnati. Following the performance will be a discussion with
Kathy Y. Wilson, whose work is the foundation of the production. The
play starts at 6 p.m. in MainStreet Cinema in TUC.

I chose this position, because I have experience in marketing and public relations. SPJ is important because it helps with networking. There are a lot of programs that journalism students hear about through SPJ that can help students meet people already established in the profession and gain contacts. SPJ also provides students with contacts for internships. SPJ also helps students because it is a community where soon-to-be journalists can bounce ideas off of each other, which can help students improve their writing. Someone might mention an aspect of a story or a potential interviewee that the writer might not have thought of, which can help improve the story.

In 300 words or less, please tell us why you’re applying for your chosen position and what you will bring to e-board:

Even though I haven’t really been involved in SPJ until now, I’ve heard how great it is from other journalism students who have graduated as well as some people who are in SPJ now. I really want to take advantage of this great journalism community at UC. I’m applying to be Secretary because I think it would help me learn more about SPJ. By taking minutes at meeting and listening to everyone, I’ll be able to learn more about how the organization works so that I can get even more involved in the future.

I have a lot of leadership skills that I can bring to e-board. I’ve held many leadership positions on campus including the 2009 Future Greek Leaders Council, RallyCats Fountain Committee Chair 2009, and Honors Retreat Leader (Summer 2008). I also attended the LeaderShape Institute in December 2008 through the University Honors Program. I’ve learned a lot by holding these leadership positions, and I can bring a lot of those lessons to SPJ’s e-board. I’ve learned how to work with others and compromise when important decisions need to be made. I’ve also learned effective leadership skills such as inspiring others to help a group achieve things and leading with integrity. I would love to bring these qualities to SPJ’s e-board.

The conferences are a great opportunity to network. You never know when you could need that contact, or when one of those contacts could mean a job for you!

Although I don’t know much about the technical aspect of websites, I am quick to learn and I have some great ideas. The editing and design class I took last year was just a taste of what design is all about, but I’m confident that I could make the page tasteful and professional but still fun. Also, I’m big on multimedia (podcasts and audio slideshows) and photography so it would be easy for me to come up with some great ideas to make the website more interactive. I am eager to get more involved with UC SPJ and would be willing to help out in all areas, not just one.

It helps to connect student journalists with working professionals, a priceless advantage when seeking work or mentorships.

In 300 words or less, please tell us why you’re applying for your chosen position and what you will bring to e-board: I have been an active member of the Society of Professional journalists for the last two years. Last year I was the vice president and was elected to the presidency for the 2008-09 academic year. In my time on e-board I have learned much of the student-run organization and how students can use the programs and activities to network. I am dedicated to learning more about social and new media and passing the information on to the rest of SPJ. I can use my experiences with The News Record and internships to bring unique programming ideas to the e-board. Additionally, aside from SPJ, I am co-News Editor of The News Record and a journalism Major Mentor – the skill sets of journalism students I encounter is wide-ranging, which, I believe, gives me great insight to what students are looking for. Cincy SPJ Law Program

Next week, Wednesday, Feb. 18, the Greater Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists and the Cincinnati Bar Association are scheduled to host a "Law and Media Night," on the fifth floor of the Cincinnati Bar Center, 6 to 8 p.m.

Journalists who attend will be given a 211-page handbook, "The Legal Handbook for Ohio Journalists" and a copy of the 2008-09 legal directory, which lists more than 8,000 local attorneys.

All who wish to attend must RSVP with Julie Kemble Borths, jkborths@cincybar.org by Friday, Feb. 13.

Shield Law Introduced to Congress

Friends,

Today, the Federal Shield Law was reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. If passed and signed into law, the Shield Law would protect journalists who refuse to reveal anonymous sources. Obviously, this is huge and would be an incredible victory for journalism.

To ensure that our government knows how important this is, everyone should write to their representative to show your support. Ask family, friends, your neighbor - even if they're not a journalist, they should know that this law would help protect the First Amendment rights of journalists.

Fellow student journalists need your help!

Hello friends!

Fellow student journalists at Ohio University are experiencing some trouble with their Board of Trustees and obtaining public records.

Evan, OU Society of Professional Journalists president, has posted on the chapters' blog about the problem they are having with C. Daniel Delawder, board chairman.

The blog entry states:

"To use Mr. Delawder’s own words, this is a very sore subject for me, and perhaps it is time we start pushing back. And I am quite serious. Should this asinine policy be implemented by the OU Board of Trustees, SPJ will certainly push back – just like it has done for the past 100 years in order to protect the nature and rights of people and journalists across the nation. The Board needs to live up to its creed of account ability to its constituencies and hiding public records is quite counterproductive."

I recommend everyone read the article and extend a helping hand to our peers. This may not be happening on our campus right now, but if we ever needed help, certainly they would do the same for us. We are all journalists fighting the same fight for the right to report the truth. The laws - Ohio Open Records Law, an extension of the Freedom of Information Act - that grant access to public records are imperative to journalists in reporting all of the necessary information.

And, because the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists is to improve and protect journalism, it's time we step up to do just that.

Poking around the SPJ Web site (a.k.a. procrastinating) I found a "find a mentor" program! You have to be a paid member of the pro chapter to sign up - and you should be - and they will connect you with a professional journalist who will provide help, support and guidance. Awesome, right?

It's super easy to sign up: enter your name, contact information, write, at most, 300 words total on what your interests are, what you want out of a career in journalism and what you would like from a mentor.

I seriously suggest you pay the $36 for a student membership and sign up for the program. What's the worst that could happen? You pay $36 and meet someone who could connect you to a job after you graduate? Tragic!

Professors and professional journalists: If you're interested but beyond the point of needing a mentor, don't worry; you can sign up to be one!

newspaper editors at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Saturday Feb. 14, in downtown Durham, N.C.

About 25-30 editors primarily from newspapers in the South will
be looking for candidates at this job fair. Recruiters from some
large national newspapers will also attend.

If your a member of the Society of the Professional Journalists, you'll have a super nifty member ID card and you would have paid a small fee, the deadline to enter the Mark of Excellence contest is Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Some quick guidelines from SPJ:

To be eligible, work must have been published or broadcast during the 2008 calendar year. All entries must be in English. Each submission must include a completed entry form, entry fee and other requested information. Student members of SPJ are eligible to enter for $9. The non-member fee is $18.

All entries are first judged on the regional level. Regional award winners will be recognized at SPJ's spring conferences. First-place regional winners advance to the national competition. National winners will be honored at the 2009 SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference in Indianapolis, August 27-29.

The Greater Cincinnati chapter is scheduled to host a new media panel, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 28.

The program will tackle how journalists are navigating issues related to the Web as their job responsibilities change. What do online readers expect from their news sources? How much investigative news can and should be done online? What role does print media play in these changing times? Panelists include Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner David Umhoefer and Brad King of NKU's Media Informatics program (formerly a reporter for Wired Magazine).

Covering religion can be complex and knowing the best ways to approach sources in the faith community will make your job easier. Join the Greater Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists for a discussion with religious leaders on how they work with the press. What do they think of news coverage of faith issues? How can it be done better? What's the proper protocol in interacting with religious groups? How hard should journalists push religious groups for information? The panel is a chance for both media and faith representatives to open the lines of communication for better, more accurate coverage.

HAL PORTER
The Rev. Dr. Hal Porter is Pastor Emeritus of Mt Auburn Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati. He has served pastorates in California, Michigan, and Wisconsin before coming to Cincinnati in 1983. He represented the Presbyterian Church (USA) on the board of the Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati for the past 19 years. He was co-chair of Citizens to Restore Fairness, which led to the repeal of Article XII of the City Charter that discriminated unfairly against homosexual citizens of Cincinnati. Mt Auburn Church has received several national recognitions and has often been in the local news for its strong advocacy for social justice and equity issues. Recognitions that reflects his community involvement: the Libertarian Award from the American Civil Liberties Union’s Tri State Chapter; Maurice McCrackin Peace and Justice Award; Cincinnati Special Proclamation and Key to City 1991 and, again, 1998; and Person of Courage Award – from the Gay Community of Greater Cincinnati.

KAREN DABDOUB
Karen Dabdoub is currently the Executive Director of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Cincinnati Office. Formerly she was the Administrator of the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati for five years. Karen also serves the community as a commissioner with the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, as a member of the Martin Luther King Coalition of Cincinnati, the FBI Multi-Cultural Advisory Council and the WCPO TV Community Advisory Board. She formerly served on the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Community Advisory Committee. Karen has been a docent/tour guide and speaker for the Islamic Center’s Tours and Talks program for 13 years. She has participated in many interfaith forums in the Cincinnati tri-state area, she has spoken at churches, schools, universities and to a variety of professional and civic groups. Ms. Dabdoub is a native Cincinnatian and a graduate of Ohio University.

ROBERT FRIEDLY
Bob Friedly, for 21 years, was the public relations vice president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He also edited the denomination's magazine The Disciple for nine years before his retirement, and was founding editor of DisciplesWorld magazine in retirement. A former New Orleans newspaper reporter and waterfront columnist, he won the Associated Press outstanding newspaper reporting award for Louisiana and Mississippi in 1964. He was treasurer and one of the founders of the national journalists organization, Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), that a number of Pulitzer Prize winners initiated following Watergate. As a journalist he interviewed entertainers Elvis Presley and Jack Benny, labor leaders Jimmy Hoffa and Tough Tony Anastasia, inventors Buckminster Fuller and Rube Goldberg, rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and astronaut James Lovell, hotelman Conrad Hilton Jr., Nobel Prize winner Desmond Tutu, Prime Ministers Sir Garfield Todd (Rhodesia) and Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe). He traveled to 31 countries including Russia, China, and India, and visited Zimbabwe with Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King III. He is one of the few people to have met both John F. Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald.

BRIAN JAFFEE
Brian Jaffee is the Jewish Community Relations Council Director at the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. Brian takes the professional reins of one of the most well-established JCRCs in the country, with a 75-year history serving as the public affairs arm of Cincinnati’s organized Jewish community. Instrumental in chartering the expansion of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s award-winning Political Leadership Development Program, Brian has trained and motivated thousands of campus and community activists across the country, and developed extensive experience working with ethnic and faith community leaders. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with degrees in Political Science and History, Brian is a natural educator and a highly accomplished public speaker. He has been to Israel more than 15 times, and has led more than a dozen leadership missions to the Jewish State.

DAN ANDRIACCO
Dan Andriacco has been communications director for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati for 11 years. Before joining the Archdiocese in 1997, he worked for the Cincinnati Post for almost 24 years as a business reporter and business editor. With a Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia Theological Seminary, he teaches classes at the Athenaeum of Ohio / Mount St. Mary's Seminary and the College of Mount St. Joseph. He has written two books on media from a religious or ministry perspective, Screeen Saved and Taming the Media Monster, as well as dozens of articles. He serves on the advisory boards of a number of non-profit corporations.

The Kaiser Media Internships Program, established in 1994, is an intensive 12-week summer internship for young journalists interested in specializing in health reporting, with a particular commitment to coverage of health issues affecting diverse and immigrant communities.

The Media Internships Program provides an initial week-long briefing on health issues and health reporting in Washington, D.C. Interns are then based for ten weeks at their newspaper, online, or radio/TV station, typically under the direction of the Health or Metro Editor/News Director, where they report on health issues. The program ends with a 3-day meeting in Boston to hear critiques from senior journalists and to go on final site visits. The aim is to provide young journalists or journalism college graduates with an in-depth introduction to and practical experience on the specialist health beat, with a particular focus on diverse and immigrant communities.

Students, administrators squabble at Quinnipiac University

HAMDEN, Conn. -- A dispute between student journalists and the administration at Quinnipiac University is drawing national attention after officials cut off access to athletes and coaches and threatened to expel the school's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

The disagreement began last year when the university ordered the student staff of the university's newspaper, The Chronicle, not to post news online until it appeared in the weekly newspaper. Editors also objected to filing interview requests through the university public relations department.

Quinnipiac said the newspaper will reorganize to become independent, but most of its editors left last spring over the dispute and formed The Quad News, an online newspaper unaffiliated with Quinnipiac. University officials instructed administrators, staff, faculty, coaches and athletes not to talk to the new newspaper. Quinnipiac continues to sponsor The Chronicle, now primarily led by underclassmen.

"It was really difficult," said Quad News editor Jason Braff. "We didn't really back down. We wanted to get all sides of the story."

Last month, Quinnipiac also threatened to expel the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists after it allowed some Quad News members to hold a meeting in a room on campus reserved by the chapter. University officials The Quad News is not allowed to use university facilities because it not an sanctioned student group.

The threat prompted the SPJ's national office to express concern.

"We hope that you will realize that banning a student organization for actions that are not only legal but well-intentioned would send a message across the country that the university leadership does not support the principles of free speech, free press and free association that are outlined in the First Amendment," the national group said in a letter to Quinnipiac officials.

Neil Ralston, SPJ vice president of campus chapter affairs, said he had not been contacted by the administration. Ralston said he regularly hears of universities trying to control what student publications write.

"This is the first time a school has threatened one of our chapters," Ralston said.

For 30 years, Gergen has been an active participant in American national life—as a commentator, an editor, a teacher, a public servant, a best-selling author and an adviser to four presidents. He served as director of communications for President Reagan and held positions in the administrations of Presidents Nixon and Ford. In 1993, he put his country before politics when he agreed to first serve as counselor to President Clinton on both foreign policy and domestic affairs, then as special international adviser to the president and to Secretary of State Warren Christopher.

David Gergen is a professor of public service and the director of the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is also editor-at-large at U.S. News & World Report and is a Senior Political Analyst for CNN. Mr. Gergen also regularly serves as an analyst on radio shows, and he is a frequent lecturer at venues around the world. In the fall of 2000 he published a best-selling book titled, Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton.

Friday, September 19, is the 2008 Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists Award Banquet. I encourage everyone to purchase tickets and attend. There will be tons of professionals to meet and network with.

The winners of the annual journalism awards will be announced that evening. We will also pay tribute to the Cincinnati Post/The Kentucky Post which, after 126 years, stopped production. Three journalists will also be inducted into the Cincinnati SPJ hall of fame.

There will also be a silent auction to help fund a Cincinnati SPJ scholarship for journalism students. (Yeah!)

The Greater Cincinnati SPJ is sponsoring a half-day multimedia workshop Saturday, October 11, at WCPO, 1720 Gilbert Ave. The program is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost for students and SPJ members is $20. For non-members that would like to attend, $50 will get you a year’s membership and access to the event. (That will save you about $42! The usual cost of the year-long membership is $72 and you don’t have to pay the $20 for the workshop!) Use this workshop to help you hone skills for Web writing and, of course, network! Electronic magazine covers?

To celebrate Esquire's 75th year, their September cover will be electronic. Using something like a battery pack, the cover will flash "the 21st Century Begins Now" across its usually glossy front.

Esquire is only releasing 100,000 copies, so getting your hands on one may be difficult. But, if you do, let me know. If nothing else, I'm incredibly curious.

So what does everyone think of the electronic cover? With technology constantly changing, often before we have time to adjust to the last changes, is it only a matter of time before we're subscribing to fully-animated magazines? I, for one, hope not; I love actually having a magazine or newspaper to hold.

Hey all!

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer vacation, internship, full-time work schedule, whatever the case may be. I have been in Auburn, Ala. since mid-June interning for Lee Magazine writing mostly fashion columns, but I'll have my first cover story ever in the August issue so I am really excited about that!

Speaking of internships, I haven't heard from anyone about their summer work experience and I know someone out there has to be doing something completely awesome. Let me know! Make everyone jealous by all of the experience you're gaining by being out on the job!

If you don't have a summer internship, there is always the opportunity to intern during the school year or next summer. It's never too early to start looking and applying. CINCINNATI MAGAZINE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (EDITORIAL)

The intent of our program is to give students a taste of magazine life. Some of our former interns have gone on to full-time jobs in magazine publishing, armed with research, writing, and reporting skills that they honed during their time with us.

The primary areas of responsibility during the four-month internships are:

1) Fact checking - Every story that appears in the magazine is checked for accuracy, making fact checking the number one priority in our publishing process.

2) Research/reporting - You will be expected to help out on the research and—possibly reporting—for our larger feature packages (i.e. Top Doctors, Dining Out Guide, Travel, etc.) as well as our editorial Web content.

3) Completing short writing assignments - While fact checking is the number one priority in our internship program, we also encourage interns to research and pitch story ideas that would be appropriate for our readership. We guarantee that interns will get one clip for their portfolios, but additional opportunities to write for publication depends on the initiative students show on non-writing assignments.

4) Possibly helping with the maintenance and updating of our online calendar listings. This task includes removing old calendar items, writing/compiling new blurbs, and making editors aware of any mistakes in the listings.

5) Staff participation/interaction - Part of successfully completing an internship with us means that you have attempted to become a part of our staff. We expect interns to be proactive in asking questions, providing editorial input when requested, and seeking out the answers they need.

**NOTE: This is not a writing internship, however, the research and fact-checking responsibilities interns have at our magazine are very similar to tasks that many would take on in entry-level magazine jobs.

Our internships are unpaid and we require a minimum of 15 hours per week in the office (times and days vary depending on class/work schedules). If you

Hey, everyone.

Welcome to the new University of Cincinnati's chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists blog! If you have anything you would like to post (pictures you have taken, ideas, and thoughts on media, etc., send an e-mail to UofC.SPJ@gmail.com).

We had our last official meeting of the 2007-08 academic year this afternoon. I'm really excited at the potential the organization has for the 2008-09 school year. We have some awesome ideas and we're ready and excited to move forward on implementation.

For those of you who were unable to attend the meeting, here is a synopsis of what went on:

Next year we are planning on asking members to pay $5 in dues to help fund awesome events and workshops.

Some of the workshops and events that we are going to work on scheduling include a Police and the Press symposium, an interviewing workshop, a photojournalism workshop, a Science and the Press symposium and a new media Website building workshop.

We are, of course, open to lots of ideas from our members. If there is anything you would like to see, just let us know and we'll see what we can accommodate for the coming school year!

Also, we would like to set up an archive to display the work that the members of UC SPJ have done. This would be a place to read articles, columns, features or to look at pictures, photo essays or even videos.

If you have an awesome summer internship or are doing something J-related, let us know! We're interested in what our members are working on!

This is going to be a great year for our chapter and I'm excited to meet and work with everyone! If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or ideas, please let us know!
